Wow! with a title like that, you'd expect a long historical dissertation.
Well, you're not getting one.
I just had a thought about Gutenberg watching wide-eyed (Oh, and in case you're lost here, Gutenberg invented the printing press. A long, long time ago, in the 1400s...) while we casually print out small and big documents, promotional items, place cards, season's greetings and indeed photographs in our own homes.
OK, so photographs weren't invented in Gutenbergs day - I said he'd be wide-eyed!
I was born in 1963, and our teacher had to use something called stencils if she wanted anything distributed to all of us. This involved ink, and it smelled. It was also done by hand.
My point?
The evolution from Gutenberg to the stencil (500+ years worth) wasn't much, compared to all that's happened in IT (and printing) during the last 40 years.
That's it, really. I guess I'll never be too old to wonder.
