Let's Chew Some Fat

I've always loved the British' way with words. My late first hubby actually called me the trouble and strife (wife). Mash'n bangers, mince'n tatties, sticky toffee pudding - I found it quite endearing. (until I tasted it, of course).
It's easily misunderstood. Especially for a wog (foreigner) like myself. "Lets' chew the fat" doesn't mean: "let's pop a couple of Fenphedras and burn off those lovehandles" but "Let's have a chat". "I'll just pop out for a fag" doesn't mean "I'm off to buy myself a male prostitute", but "I'm going outside for a cigarette".

That sort of thing.

What????

I quite often post around specific keywords on this blog. Now, there are several ways of doing this:
You can blog about the keyword specifically, you can incorporate it in a sentence about something completely different, or you can slot the keyword in at a random place in your post, unburdened by context or meaning.
I usually go for one of the first two ways - the last one is neither fun nor fair, in my view.
There is a fourth alternative too that I sometimes use. The "I know nothing, I'm a foreigner" approach.
This is one instance of that. The term used cisco meant nothing to me to begin with. I did, however, research it, and worked out what it actually means.
Because a post on the theme would be dreadfully boring coming from me, I'm hiding behind the fact that I'm a foreigner, and evading the issue.

One More Thing

Before I start cleaning this place: I feel like Scrooge.
Very soon, I'm going to need one of those U-Pack self storage containers. (Great service, btw. Did I ever miss one of those when we moved here!)
Anyway. Why do I need one now? For the money.
I get emails every day with great "business propositions". Apparently, there's loads'a cash without owners floating around, and "bank officials" from all over the world want ME to help them get this money (huge sums of it) out of their country.
All they need from me are all my details, and a very nominal sum paid for "expenses", since they can't touch the money just yet.
I hope people don't fall for these scams. Chances are that some do - or the emails would surely stop.
While I'm waiting for all that cash to show up at my doorstep, I won't bother with the container just yet. I'll keep an empty suitcase handy though...

Company Coming

The in-laws and hubbys uncle are coming for coffee this afternoon. The uncle has never been here before - there has been quite a contretemps in the family for some time. That's resolved now, and he's coming here today, which will be nice.
However.
That sort of thing means cleaning house. I mean - we're 8 people, and we LIVE here. Hobbies, toys, books, heaps of clean, folded clothes waiting for their reluctant owners... I wouldn't recommend dropping your contact lenses on the floor either. If you were lucky enough to find them, they'd quite probably be covered in birdseed, feathers and breadcrumbs... Actually, you wouldn't find them. They'd be abducted by dust-bunnies.
So: I'm not here. I'm cleaning. And baking an apple cake. Bye!

Aren't Comments Wonderful?

This blog is getting a lot of comments. Pretty weird, since it doesn't get many visitors, but my little epistles about such madly interesting things as, for instance, car insurance or furniture will get comments so full of praise that even a narcissistic Norwegian housewife can tell that they're scam.
I haven't deleted them though. If I'm having an off day, I come back to them to get a boost, and be reminded of how wonderful I am, and how well appreciated my thoughts on... say... garden gnomes are in the virtual world.
Good for morale, I can tell you!

Stumped Again

I'm supposed to write something soulful here, and somehow, somewhere include the keywords reno hotels...
I've struggled with it for some time, but I've realized that I can't. My partner in blogging will just have to forgive me. No one would have believed me anyway. I don't know the first thing about the place. Much less about the hotels there. Come to think of it, I don't even know which state we're talking about.
Sorry.

I Like A Man In Uniform As Much As The Next Gal

I do, I admit it.
So - when asked to provide a link to a police gear site, I'm happy to oblige. Mind you, most of the gear in question is quite as useable for picking mushrooms in the great outdoors as for catching bad guys. The 5.11 Tactical Series isn't all about policing - they even have a kiddies series to go with the adult one.
Hunting, hiking, you'll find just the right clothing for almost any old outdoor activity here, and the footwear section is very comprehensive too.
I might just go there to kit out my own personal squad of hunters/gatherers, girls and boys alike!

A Brood Of Techno Brats, But No Bloggers - Yet

The Brats are really into their MP3s (ipods are high on their wish lists), they're totally dependent on their cell phones (wonder why - there's never any money on their phone cards when a call home is required), and they're starting to learn their way around computers too.

I'm a bit surprised that the idea of blogging hasn't caught on. I've tried to sell it, but so far, there's no interest. I guess Facebook and our local variation of the same take care of their need to express themselves, but it seems so limited to me.

They may get there yet, once they get over the fact that Mum's blogging, and the belief that therefore, blogging is for oldies...

Gutenberg And The Computer Age

Wow! with a title like that, you'd expect a long historical dissertation.
Well, you're not getting one.
I just had a thought about Gutenberg watching wide-eyed (Oh, and in case you're lost here, Gutenberg invented the printing press. A long, long time ago, in the 1400s...) while we casually print out small and big documents, promotional items, place cards, season's greetings and indeed photographs in our own homes.
OK, so photographs weren't invented in Gutenbergs day - I said he'd be wide-eyed!
I was born in 1963, and our teacher had to use something called stencils if she wanted anything distributed to all of us. This involved ink, and it smelled. It was also done by hand.
My point?
The evolution from Gutenberg to the stencil (500+ years worth) wasn't much, compared to all that's happened in IT (and printing) during the last 40 years.

That's it, really. I guess I'll never be too old to wonder.
