Fun Fashion

Being of a non-English persuation, I had no idea what boardshorts were before seeing them on the 'Net. I don't even know if it is a household term, but they're quite fun... My oversized frame would probably look best in the longer, male varieties, but the short ones sure would look lovely on my girls.
Since I'm also terminally old-fashioned, I don't care for it when people's shorts are sagging so much their underpants are showing, but there you go - I guess that fad will pass...
Anyway - have a look at the boardshorts - they look comfy too...

Too Many People Or Too Few Chairs?

I've been looking at coffee tables. Ours is too small - we quite enjoy using that for our Friday or Saturday evening meal, but with eight people around it, there's hardly room for any food. As the two little ones grow, there won't be room for the people either.
The thing is, that the ones I've seen are either too ugly or too small, as well as pricy, so we've made do so far. I can't use glass (I'm not a polisher...), and it wouldn't fit in with our (lack of) style, either.
I do, however, have two beautiful triangular pieces of cherry wood, that would make a lovely table top when put together. All I need to do is to figure out what to use as a base. Anyone care to carve four large wooden pyramids for me? Cubes or cylinders would do, as well...

Sink Or Swim

My grandmother used to be a swimming instructor, among other things. She'd have a 2 week course for the local kids every year by the lake, and whatever the weather was like, all the kids would be there, freezing and learning to swim.
# 1 Brat learned from her, # 2 Brat too - but now that # 5 Brat is of age to start learning, Grandma is gone... So this one is up to me.
At the moment, she sinks whenever she tries to keep afloat, but if this summer turns out to be a good one, we'll have her swimming by the end of it. I'll certainly give it a go. It's the best life insurance when kids are near the water...

Photo Trouble

I've got to get a new memory SD card for my camera. I haven't needed more than one - I transfer all my photos to my computer every week or so, and then, from time to time, I burn them onto CDs for safe keeping.
Now however, it looks like my memory card has got some sort of memory lapse.
The photos are in there, but they can't be transferred to my PC. Luckily, we're only talking about a few photos, but I have to go shop for a new one before taking any more pics.
Do I know that this is the problem? No, but it's the only solution I can try out on my own... If that doesn't work, the problem is in the camera, and I don't want that...

A Poor Relation

This blog has become a poor relation, but for some reason, Google still views it as equal to my other one - they both have a PR rank of 2...
Maybe it's the variety of topics. Thanks to my unnamable partner, I write posts about everything under the sun here, and that's probably a niche as good as any...
Most keywords will, in a twisted sort of way, have something to do with life as I know it. Take small business opportunities, for example. My head is full of ideas on how to earn a full-time or part-time living from the farm, and all I really need to realize them is time. A bit of money wouldn't go amiss, but time is the main issue.
Add to that a benign and experienced mentor or coach (and perhaps a gang of cheerleaders), and I'm in business...
The only thing is, If I have to hire a nanny, cook, gardener and cleaner to create the time, I probably have to make two full-time livings to make it worthwhile.
If just ONE of those "You're a winner" e-mails was for real....

Long Overdue

My day is set to bill-paying mode. With all the goings on around here, I've put them off for far too long.
It's not that I can't pay them, I just hate it!
So - to avoid foreclosure, I'd better get to it. :-(
Blog hopping is way more fun. So is sticking my arm in an ant hive.
Actually - must go and water the sheep first.

No, I'm not procrastinating. Not at all - one has to be kind to animals...

I Love France

- I really do. After having lived there for 7 years of my life in total, and visiting countless times, my fascination with the country keeps growing...

It's a perfect country for driving, for example. There are autoroutes (motorways), most of which are toll roads, but if you're not in a hurry, there will always be smaller roads that are free, and that will take you through picturesque villages and lovely scenery.

I've learned to avoid the major cities when driving - it may be a good idea to park the car and use public transport. We once spent 2 hours trying to move our car closer to one of the Bordeaux Hôtels we had booked into... Boy, did we wish we hadn't left the city map in our room - it was only two blocks, you see! We finally found the hotel - by accident!
Neither of us have any sense of direction, so we really had it coming... Remember though, if you're going to drive in French cities, don't rent a big car. The interesting bits are often found in narrow streets.
As for hotels, major cities have a wide variety, and last minute booking is usually no problem. Paris Hôtels range from absolute luxury to small pensions, and are located all over the city center and beyond.
The same goes for Marseille Hôtels, if you're wanting to visit the Côte d'Azur, Toulouse Hôtels and hôtels in any other major French city.

If you're stopping in the countryside, the villages may just have one hotel or pension, and odds are it's a small one. Booking ahead saves a lot of hassle and time whenever possible...

Remember though, should you choose to travel the smaller roads: Lunchtime is from noon to 2pm (sometimes 3). If you miss it, you'll have to wait till 6pm, or get yourself onto a motorway, where restaurants serve food at all hours... Also, if you're after good, honest local fare at a reasonable price, this is the sign to be looking for on a restaurant along the road. The truckers of France favor these places, and they're a hungry lot!

No Bikini This Year

I'm not blessed with a beach-friendly body at the moment...
I'm not really bothered either - there are more important things in life. I know - I've had all kinds of plans to do something about it, but they all seem to dwindle. I guess when you have to feed 7 other people on a "normal" diet, you don't really feel like cooking up a second meal for yourself. I suppose I could live on tomatoes and grapefruit, and/or stuff myself with one of the millions of top diet pills out there, but there's something missing... Motivation!
Never mind - my gang loves me as I am.

Parties And Family

We had a great confirmation party for # 4 Brat on Saturday, and yesterday, we celebrated # 1 Brats 19th birthday. My sister sent a big bunch of flowers for her, and that's lovely, but I can't help but think that she should spend her nonexistant funds on her own kids, and her time in a drug rehab facility...
It's also hard to appreciate the gesture from someone who's so obviously seeking attention, and whose motives are questionable at the best of times.
As it is, Brat is enjoying her flowers, while wondering why there wasn't as much as a card for the confirmation girl...

I Forget...

... and so does this computer. Well, it doesn't actually forget, but it sure takes it a long time to remember these days. Switching to Firefox did wonders for it, now it's getting slow again. It may be time to expand its computer memory and for a thorough cleanup.
I know these things don't last forever, but I'm not buying a new one yet. I need my PCs to live quite a bit longer than 2 years, and this one certainly will!

A Good Night's Sleep

A few years ago, we bought memory foam mattresses. We used to have a water bed, which was fine for many years, but then we started to feel the need for something a little firmer. Memory foam turned out to be a great choice. It's firm, but "caves in" to our bodies in a way that gives support in all the right places.
It's still just as difficult to get to bed, though. I'm an inveterate night owl, with a strong tendency to "bedsheetophobia", so I get to spend way too few hours in bed.
This, of course, makes a good mattress even more important. Quality over quantity...
