Memory - And This Time It's Serious.

I've been known to make light of my own terrible memory lately - to me, it's just bad concentration (I hope). Sadly, there are way too many people out there to whom memory loss is a tragic reality.

I've been called upon to promote the Alzheimer's Memory Walk. This walk is THE event in the US to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer care, support and research. The call is for volunteers of all ages - become a team captain in the fight against Alzheimers!

The husband of a very dear friend of mine died of Alzheimer's a few years ago. He was an MD, and his "doctor persona" was one of the last things he lost. That, and his piano skills. He would have no idea who was visiting him, but obligeingly played the piano for them. It was so very sad...
My own aunt, who died last year, was never diagnosed. She had dementia, and it was worsening gradually, but whether it was Alzheimer's, an undiagnosed brain tumor or the aftereffects of strokes, we shall never know. To me, it doesn't matter. Any research done in this field will help all dementia patients one way or another. Giving the right diagnosis (and thus the right treatment)will be easier, and knowledge just might help the patients to retain as many of their faculties as possible for as long as possible. Even just an extra week knowing the people who love you can make a world of difference.

Why walk? Chances are, you go for a walk anyway. Why not walk with a purpose? Join forces, get the team off the couch, and move us closer to a world without Alzheimer's. A typical Memory Walk is held on a weekend morning in the fall, and it's about 2-3 miles long. There are walks in around 600 communities. Team up with the Alzheimer's Association!

I do agree that memory loss is a very sad thing. My uncle had this problem and he was a doctor and soon he had to lose this profession since he forgot every thing that he learned.

It definitely is a very sad thing. I don't know anyone who has this kind of disease but I remember the movie "The Notebook". Recalling the woman's condition still makes me cry.

Dementia can be caused by various diseases which affect the parts of the brain involved with thought processes. However, most cases are caused by Alzheimer's disease or vascular dementia. All of the types of dementia cause similar symptoms, but some features may point to a particular cause. Therefore, quite often it is not possible to say which disease is causing the dementia in each individual case.

Alzheimer's is a disease that attacks the brain. It is the most common form of dementia.Alzheimer's is not a normal part of aging.it's a progressive and fatal disease.Alzheimer’s disease is a brain disorder named for German physician Alois Alzheimer, who first described it in 1906. Scientists have learned a great deal about Alzheimer’s disease in the century since Dr.Alzheimer first drew attention to it.
